Ladyfest Toronto is a four-day arts, culture and music festival. We are a non-profit, grassroots, do-it-yourself collective who seek to promote urban feminism. We work from a framework that is pro-feminist, trans-inclusive, pro-diversity and anti-oppressive. We seek to build community among Toronto's feminist businesses, artists, activists and academic community. We believe that art is a powerful form of resistance and hope to incite dialogue about contemporary feminist issues in our city. We will be providing a venue for women to express themselves and showcase their work free of sexism, classism, racism, and homophobia; as well as other forms of oppression.

We believe that politics can be fun and hope to facilitate political action and create tools for feminist networking at our annual event. We will proudly showcase the talent and actions of both local and international women. Ultimately, we hope Ladyfest Toronoto inspires women everywhere to organize themselves and create similar spaces that allow women's creative works to be seen and heard, as other Ladyfest's have for us.

FAQ:

Why do the festival?
As individuals we have personal reasons for being involved in the feminist movement, but as a whole we've decided that the point of this festival is to showcase and create a network of Toronto's feminist community. We hope to create a safe space that inspires creativity and political action. We believe that even though there are diverse perspectives among today's feminists, there are still ways we can work together for change.

One goal of Ladyfest T.O. is to promote feminist issues in our city and raise awareness of the rights amongst all women. We are hoping to dispel the myths that feminism is dead and only found amongst extremist groups. Ladyfest T.O. offers something for everyone, whether you are an identified feminist or curious about the ideas of it.

When will festival happen?
September 18 to 21, 2008

Where will it be?
The venues will be concentrated around Kensington Market.

Who's invited?
Anyone who's interested and open minded; ideally people who identify with the feminist ideals of inclusion, equality, and social action to name a few. We are committed to having diverse participation and attendance throughout the planning of this festival as well as the festival itself. We will be doing as much as possible to ensure that this happens, including inviting a range of groups and organizations to participate.

How much will it cost to attend?
TBA

How will the Festival Coordinators deal with inclusiveness and ensure diversity?
A central tenet of today's feminism is diversity and inclusiveness; this festival is no exception. We are doing our utmost to ensure a transparent methodology for our planning and for the festival itself. One of the key aspects of this is the open meetings we will be holding a minimum of once a month once. We are taking on suggestions that pop up at these meetings and outright asking for ideas and suggestions with regards to festival content. Anyone who has any questions/concerns/comments is always welcome to contact us through our email ladyfesttoronto@gmail.com. Any help and advice that you may have to impart is very much desired. We will be actively inviting participation and attendance from a range of groups, organizations, and individuals. We strive to be aware and counteract the exclusive, hierarchical tendencies of a society that still oppresses people, that doesn't recognize or support a range of sexual orientations and gender identities, and that discriminates based on class, race, dis/ability, and more.

Where is the funding coming from?
We are looking at a variety of sources for funding. We are also going to be canvassing local businesses and organizations for other services we may require, such as printing. We are currently looking into funding from the Toronto Art's Council.

Who's performing/presenting/being showcased?
We are in the beginning processes of planning and have not begun to put together the program. We are looking to host a wide array of both local and international women and trans folk. We are looking for submissions from film makers, visual artists, spokenword performers, musicians, craftsters, comedians, performance artists, and comic book artists/zinesters.
